Yellow Spotted Lizard
All About The Yellow Spotted Lizard
The yellow spotted lizard is a large type of night lizard. It can be found and lives naturally in South America and it is a lepidophyma flavimaculatim. They are almost completely black in color but they do have small yellow spots that are seen on the sides of their bodies. They also have a yellow underbelly. The yellow spotted lizard resembles a cross between a snake and an alligator and they can live in the wild for up to 15 years.
The head of one of these lizards appears to look like a snake head. It is flat in shape and the eyes appear on either side of the head. The jaw line can also be covered in yellow spotting. The body of the yellow spotted lizard is long and thin and although it does have a snake like body, this creature has rough scaly skin, which gives it an alligator appearance. The lizard also has a very long tail and it is covered in yellow bands.
These creatures like humid hot temperatures and they prefer a wet climate. They live and thrive in dead and decaying logs that lie on the forest floor and they hide under decaying leaves. It can also be found under rocks and in caves but it will rarely be seen by humans. It is most comfortable when it is hiding.
The eyes of the yellow spotted lizard are unique because these creatures do not have eyelids. They can reach up to 6 inches long and they consume different types of prey. Arthropods, scorpions and any insect that can be found living in rotting logs are fair game for this type of lizard. But they can also consume vegetation like grass or leaves if there isn’t any prey available.
Most night lizards are viviparous. This means that instead of producing eggs, the mother develops the embryo inside of her body and gives birth after her term. Another unique feature of this animal is the ability to reproduce without the presence of a male. This is called a parthenogenesis which is asexual reproduction. The female of the species is able to develop and grow an embryo without being fertilized by a male. Usually the offspring produced by parthenogenesis is always female.
You can occasionally find a yellow spotted lizard in a pet store but they are in scarce supply. They are not endangered species but they are dwindling in population because of a diminishing habitat. It can also be difficult to keep their cages hydrated enough for them to be comfortable. You can tame a yellow spotted lizard, if you get the animal when it is young. But even if the creature is trained, it can still bite. The bite of this type of lizard is not poisonous but it is said to be very painful. This is one thing to consider before buying one of these lizards. Another problem is shedding. If a lizard does not have the right amount of moisture, it will have problems shedding. This occurs right after the creature has given birth and it can be harmful to the health of the lizard.
You will also have to give the animal shelter within the cage. Since it loves to hide in the wild, it feels most comfortable hidden. If it is not allowed to hide, it can damage the nose scale on the animal and if it is kept in a glass aquarium type cage this can also happen. It may also be a good idea to only have one male yellow spotted lizard in a cage at once. They are known to fight and become aggressive if placed too close together.
